What It Is (Double Bubble)
May 6 – 15
Alex Hubbard presents a video installation including handmade benches and a two-sided wood and concrete projection surface. Projecting across the space of the New Year gallery are two videos showing bubbles and smoke emerging from the surface of a pool of ceramic slip. Described entertainingly by the artist as “like watching paint dry,” the work “What It Is (Double Bubble)” develops from another two-channel video installation “How It Is,” on view at the Sculpture Center in Queens, NY. The earlier work shows a series of objects being dropped into slip; the new work reverses the direction of movement from down to up, and replaces objects with the abstract qualities of air and smoke.
