New Year 09: Allison Hrabluik

Allison Hrabluik: Corundum
May 20 – 29

For the ninth installment in New Year, Western Bridge’s series of two-week projects, Allison Hrabluik offers Corundum, a single channel video installation with a soundtrack by Andrea Young. Beginning with a photograph of herself, Hrabluik creates a stop motion animation, multiplying a single mole at the base of her neck and using moles found using a Google image search to deform her image. The sequence of the animation is arranged according to a four-note score created for the artist by Andrea Young. Each note is assigned a corresponding mole, allowing the artist to work directly from the score. This work will be shown later at The Kunstcentrum BelgiĆ« in Hasselt, Belgium, in an exhibition working from the famed Rimbaud line “Je suis un autre.” In this work, Hrabluik makes of herself, her image, a self-portrait that is also an other.

Allison Hrabluik is an artist living in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her animated and live action videos, sculptures, drawings, and texts have been presented at Tatjana Pieters/OneTwenty Gallery, Ghent, Belgium; Isabella Bortolozzi Galerie, Berlin; Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; Mercer Union, Toronto; The Western Front, Vancouver; Catriona Jeffries Gallery, Vancouver; Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, Ontario; and Artspeak, Vancouver.
